I'm always looking for healthy restaurants to try out, and luckily Julia is always up for trying out new places with me. We have been talking about checking out Lettuce Love Cafe for a while, and we finally managed to make it there!
Located in Burlington Ontario, Lettuce Love Cafe serves only Vegan, Gluten Free, Organic meals. They focus on healthy eating, and their menu is definitely an indication of that. Not only that, the menu consists of meals that Vegans once would think were impossible to ever have again. For example, Lettuce Love offers a Cesar salad, but the dressing is made from cashews, rather than a thick creamy sauce. Lettuce Love's menu can be found here.
As I've really been focusing on making the switch to a healthier diet, I knew Lettuce Love was the place for me.
Julia and I used to live together, and then we spent two and a half weeks backpacking together, so we have become very accustomed to sharing meals. We each order something that we both are interested in, and then we each have half. It works out for both of us, especially when trying new restaurants, because we get to try more!
We had the Grilled Portobello Mushroom Sandwich, and the Organic House Made Burger.
Portobello mushrooms are a great alternative if you are looking for a meat replacement. Not only are they healthier, the texture, when grilled, is often compared to steak. The sandwich also contained avocado (my favourite), red peppers, tomato and a basil aioli, and was served on toasted organic quinoa bread. The flavours really complimented each other, and the bread was delicious. It didn't taste like some other gluten free bread, and it went well with the flavour of the basil aioli. I was very happy with this choice.
The Organic Housemade Burger is made from organic quinoa, black beans, onions, button mushrooms, flax seeds, and corn and spices. It was served with onions, lettuce and tomato. Like the sandwich, the burger was also served on the toasted quinoa bread. While I thought the quinoa bread worked well with the sandwich, I found it a bit difficult to eat with the burger on it. The housemade burger was great though! I always love trying veggie burgers that are not made out of soy products. It really shows how creative people are!
After dinner we walked over to Kelly's Bakery, which is Lettuce Love Cafe's sister bakery. I've been going to Kelly's for a few years now, and I have absolutely no complaints. All of the baked goods at Kelly's are gluten free, egg free, dairy free, butter free, peanut free and are all vegan. Each baked god is made from organic products, and are a wonderful treat when you are craving something sweet. I always go for the Mint Chocolate Cupcake, and Julia had a raspberry one. It's nice to be able to finally have a cupcake without feeling sick after!
If you're ever in Burlington, make sure to visit both of these places. There is definitely something on the menu for everyone, even if you aren't vegan on gluten free! And make sure to let me know what you think about both Lettuce Love and Kelly's!
